Tarnell
English Springer Spaniels is situated in
Mount Gambier, South Australia,
the beautiful limestone coast in the green triangle.
We are only a small kennel, where quality rather than quantity
has been the keynote through the years. Only a small number of
dogs live with us, and are cherished as both show dogs and companions.
We have bred 7 Grand Champions and titled 1 Grand Champion from Southend Kennels,
as well as breeding
37+ champions. We have titled another 7 from other kennels (including two Welsh
Springer Spaniels - these being from Scott and Eira Taylor in New Zealand).
We hope there will be many more in the future.
We average one litter of puppies per year, with some excellent
and beautiful Springers as a result. All of our breeding stock is DNA tested, tested for hip dysplasia and have annual eye tests for PRA. It is imperative that they
are free of hereditary diseases. For upcoming litters please

Our two Grand Champions!
Gypsy
on the left was the first Grand Champion Bitch
in South Australia, and Bundy on the
right was the first
Grand Champion Male in South Australia.
Our first
Springer was bought in 1982, and from that very first day of owning an English
Springer Spaniel there has never been another breed for us. Over
the years we have come to love and admire this fabulous breed more and more, and
have endeavoured to breed sound and healthy Springers with excellent
temperament; conforming to the standard.
We
started showing our second Springer, Nita (Ch Wongan Tartan Maid) in 1983,
and applied for a kennel prefix in 1984. Soon on the scene was Sunny
(BIS Ch Clanach Touch of the Sun) and then came our beloved Donald (Zanova
Chardonnay) who was our pride and joy; finishing his show career
with a Best In Show at 9 years of age. What an impression he made in the
ring! Then came 'Bundy' (MBIS Grand Champion Tarnell Dark N Stormy). We
almost placed him in a pet home because we did not like his feet, but was
convinced by an all breeds judge that we should keep him after
he advised that Bundy would grow into
them. He did!!!! Many thanks to you, sir (you know who you are). We are forever in your debt
as this
boy went on to be one of Australia's top winning Springers.
We are also
very proud of Bundy's two sons, MBIS Australian Grand Champion Tarnell Mr Inbetween
(Richman), owned by Cindy-Marie and Sonja Gangell of Southend Kennels in
Tasmania, and MBIS Australian Grand Champion Tarnell Best Seller, owned by
Ericka and Stephen Baker of Sunspur kennels in Western Australia.
Without a doubt the cream of the crop!!!!!
A
Donald son (Morgan) MBIS Grand Champion Tarnell That's For Sure is a clone
of his dad and our constant shadow. A Best in Show winner at 9 years
of age and then retired from the show ring, only going into the veteran
classes.
Another top winning dog bred at Tarnell Kennels, and owned by
the
Webb's in South Australia, is MBIS Grand Champion Tarnell
Lethal Weapon (Riggs), also winning Best in Show at 9 years of age and
best in Show 4th at 11 years of age.
We are
currently campaigning Richman's son MBIS Grand Ch Southend Richman Poorman.
Tassie and Bundy's daughter, MBIS Grand Ch Tarnell Dark Gypsy
(Amelia) who are both Best In Show winners.......
Other than showing our Springers, our interests are spending
quality time with our family, animals, studying pedigrees and
genetics, watching football (in particular, Adelaide Crows), reading
and more dog shows.
We have
two daughters. Tara owns an Irish Terrier named Kane
and she sponsors a tiger, elephant and little boy. Narelle, our youngest
daughter is married to Jamie. We are
also proud grandparents to Narelle and Jamie's sons,
Jesse Cooper, who was born on 24th October 2000 and Ethan
Joel, born on June 12th 2004. Both are the apple of our eyes !
As well as having our own children, we were also foster parents
to numerous young children which we came to love immensely.

John and Judy at Narelle & Jamie's Wedding
3rd February 1996
John and I have been married for thirty
nine years. We only knew
each other for four weeks and we were engaged, then another four
weeks and we were married - much to the horror of family and friends!
I was born in Wales, UK, and came to Australia with my parents
when I was about ten. John originates from Wangaratta in Victoria
- Ned Kelly country.
Life is certainly very fulfilling and exciting for us. Encouraging
are all Tarnell Springers and their descendants who, in other
people's hands, have taken so many top honours. A big thank you
to all, and to our fellow breeders, who helped fly the Tarnell
prefix in so many different Springers. A special thank you to the many judges
(local and international) who have appreciated the quality, temperament and
style of our Springers.
